Data Analyst Apprentice at Virgin Media
Hello, my name is Anees Shafiq. To tell you a bit about my apprenticeship, it has been a great journey where I have gained a number of valuable skills that I will be able to use for the rest of my working career. At the beginning, I was quite nervous when carrying out my daily roles but I have learnt that I have a great network of support around me and this has helped me to develop hugely in my current role. The one piece of advice I would say, is to always ask for help if you’re unsure of something, not one person is expected to know everything!
I chose to do an apprenticeship because I was looking for a career change. I had already been to university obtaining a university degree in the process. Having started a career related to my university qualifications. However I had decided I was not happy in this career as it was not fulfilling enough for me, so I started looking at different options. I looked into Data Analyst roles previously but due to not having the relevant qualifications or experience, I did not have much success in getting into the Data analyst career. Thus, I came across this apprenticeship and I felt as though it was the perfect opportunity for me to change careers and to embark on a new career as a Data Analyst. Having had both the experience of where I went straight to university with the aim of starting my career after university and doing an apprenticeship where I went back to university as well as working at the same time, I can personally say for myself, an apprenticeship has been much better for me as with the theories I learnt at university, I was able to apply it at my workplace simultaneously, this helped me to gain a better understanding quickly as well as broadening my knowledge further. I feel this has helped massively to develop my career further and I can’t wait to see how far this will take me.
I am active as a Young Apprentice Ambassador because I want to show young people there are different opportunities available and I believe an apprenticeship is the way forward as you gain qualifications whilst, at the same time you are able to apply what you have learnt in the workplace therefore giving you invaluable experience. In addition, I want to show that there is nothing to be scared in doing an apprenticeship as I’m sure you will get a great support of network like I have done myself at Virgin Media.
I am excited about The Big Assembly because it is time for me to you about my experience and how this maybe something you’d like to pursue. I would like to show that there are opportunities out there; it is just up to you to take those opportunities.
This year’s theme for NAW is diversity, promoting diversity is important to me because I believe everyone deserves the best opportunities no matter who they are. From personal experience I am someone who suffers from severe hearing loss and I really appreciate this opportunity from Virgin Media. Virgin Media have been hugely supportive in helping me to settle at my new workplace as well as providing any support that I need in order to carry out my job role.
